Privacy Policy

To use the DTC Ice Sheets Query API, you sign in using an institutional or third-party identity provider (such as Google or EOIAM). When you do this, you consent to Earthwave tracking your usage of the API. The DTC Ice Sheets Query API uniquely identifies users, but does not store any Personally Identifiable Information (PII) about these users. During sign-in, your email address is received transiently and used only to derive a pseudonymous user ID - it is not stored. This means that Earthwave are not able to identify you within the API using, for example, your email address or name. Instead, for support queries, you must provide your user ID. If you access the DTC Ice Sheets Dashboard, Earthwave also tracks dashboard activity via Plausible Analytics, a European analytics service that does not use cookies and is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the US Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the UK Data Protection Act (DPA). This tracking is entirely independent of the pseudonymous user ID system described above.

How is my data being used?

The DTC Ice Sheets Query API keeps records of user activity, via an anonymous user ID, in order to:

  • Enforce fair-use quota limits and prevent abuse.
  • Understand how the API is being used.
  • Track and predict the cost of running the API.
  • Detect and resolve bugs.

Dashboard analytics data collected via Plausible is used to understand how the dashboard is being used and to predict future usage.

Where is my data being stored?

Usage records are securely stored in a managed PostgreSQL database hosted on OVHCloud infrastructure within the EU. Only restricted Earthwave staff have access to this data. Dashboard analytics data is stored by Plausible Analytics on EU-based infrastructure.

What kind of data is being collected, and how is it being collected?

Your email address is used solely at the point of login to derive a pseudonymous user ID and is not retained. Most API features require authentication — each request must include your token, from which your user ID is derived, allowing activity to be attributed to your account. Each submitted job is logged against this user ID, alongside job input parameters and workflow compute duration. No Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is stored.

If you access the dashboard, Plausible Analytics will record that you visited the site, how long you spent on each page, and whether you performed actions such as submitting queries. In compliance with the relevant legislation, this information is not aggregated across different devices, browsers, locations or calendar days. No cookies are used, and this data is not linked to your API user ID.

How do I obtain my data, or revoke consent?

If you wish to obtain a copy of the data that Earthwave has stored while tracking your usage, please email support@earthwave.co.uk. Similarly, if you wish to revoke your consent, please email support@earthwave.co.uk and we will remove your data from our records. Note that doing so will also delete any jobs associated with your user ID.
